How To Set a Goal and Actually Hit Your Target

A lot of people have a difficult time identifying AND accomplishing goals. So, here are a few things I’ve learned over the years that I’ve found to be helpful.

First, begin with the end in mind.

Spend some time clearly defining what achieving your goal will look like and how it will feel. Be specific.

Warning: There is a danger in making your goal too broad or segmented. When the target is fuzzy, aiming is difficult. Get clarity!

Next, try finishing this phrase: “My goal will be achieved when…” Then add specific measurements such as:

  • “…I have produced X number of items.”
  • “…I have sold X number of units.” or
  • “…I reach X income.”

Lastly, give yourself a target date to have the goal completed.

Once you are crystal clear on what “victory” looks like, begin building a plan to get you there.

Start by developing a high-level strategy. What are the big pieces of the puzzle involved with accomplishing your goal?

If you find that you have more than 3 or 4 big pieces, your goal may be too broad. Consider breaking it down into a couple of separate goals for clarity of purpose.

After your big-picture strategy is established, identify the tactical steps under each of your big pieces.

Think through the specific steps. Choose the best people for each task. And assign deadline dates for each tactical step. This will ensure you’re making progress toward hitting your target date.

Finally, start. Just start.

Identify your first step and go hard. The only thing standing between you and accomplishing your goal is the hard work ahead – you can do it!
