Rock House
We featured this house in one of our caption contests in the past. Imagine our delight when we found this house featured in an article about strange houses that people actually live in! And so, we present the Rock House backstory:
This real-life Flintstones house is in Portugal. It was built in 1974 and used as a family’s rural retreat. Even though the house is next to several immense wind turbines, it still has no running water and electricity. It is a Flintstones houses though, so it probably has a lot of wise-cracking animals repurposed as household appliances.
Thanks to illustrious websites and abundantly popular newsletters such as this one, the house has garnered some international fame and become a sort of tourist spot. This is to the chagrin of the home’s actual owner who doesn’t really appreciate the extra attention. People have even tried to break into the home. Today the house that is already made of solid rock is fortified with bulletproof glass, bars on the windows, and a steel door. It’s basically Portugal’s Fort Knox.
