Loving the Moment
Recently I was leading a workshop in Columbus, Ohio for some top-level sales professionals. We were discussing how to motivate the unmotivated to make a purchase decision and I had given the attendees a very specific exercise to practice in small groups.
As I was walking around eavesdropping on the conversations and adding coaching advice along the way, I was struck by this thought: “Dang, I love my job!” I don’t know what it was. I just found myself being very present and very appreciative for what I am blessed to do for a living.
When was the last time you found yourself consciously thinking that very thought? How long has it been since you were just overwhelmed with the shear joy of what you do?
I am a die-hard San Jose Sharks hockey fan and at the time of this writing a 19-year-old rookie phenom named Thomas Hertl has the National Hockey League abuzz. Hertl is leading the league in goals scored, having recently tallied four goals in a single game – in just the third game of his young career.
The best part of the story, however, is not Hertl’s amazing skill set. It’s his attitude and his love for the game. It’s the smile on his face whenever he steps on to the ice. His is not a typical hockey face – it carries the expression of pure exuberance.
Two thoughts on this:
First, if you’re really excited about your job make sure you let your face know. There is a look to enthusiasm that is contagious to those around you (especially to your prospects).
Second, stop from time to time and consciously appreciate how blessed you really are. Take a moment to be in the moment. And then just breathe in the joy.
Love the moment, my friends. After all, you are changing people’s world!
