Boost Your Execution by Focusing on Milestone Moments
Grand plans are wonderful.
You sit in a meeting and dream up business growth ideas. You roll up your sleeves in an intense but exhilarating planning session. You even define some real goals.
Alas, then comes that moment when you must put that plan into action. It’s time to execute.
And that’s when it all breaks down.
How many initiatives have started strong but quickly lost strength? How many stop-starts have you been a part of in your management career? How many good plans went bad for lack of solid execution.
Why is this happening? What are we missing?
The answer: clearly defined milestones.
We are missing the benchmarks along the way that keep the project manageable and focused.
If your goal, project, or business plan lacks clear milestones then you should expect trouble. It’s like following a map but with no street signs along the way; like having an ingredients list but no directions.
On the other hand, milestones will show your progress clearly and the course-corrections become obvious. Milestones help us to mark our progress, change our course, and stay on track. They provide confidence and mini-victories along the way.
Here’s a suggestion. Extend your project planning by adding this critical step: define your milestone moments.
The key to defining milestone moments is to look for significant changes that will be required. For example, you might set up milestones tied to:
1. The date new or more resources are needed
2. The date you plan to change certain systems and processes used to perform the work
3. The date you plan to change work assignments or job tasks for team members
It’s time to put a stop to the stop-and-start. It’s time to go beyond plans and start defining your milestone moments that drive true change within your sales team.
It’s time to execute.
