The Power of Positive Attitude and Goal Setting with Zig Ziglar

I’m excited to kick off this series on the greatest sales leaders of all time by highlighting my all-time sales hero, Zig Ziglar. His name is synonymous with sales, motivation, and personal development. Ziglar’s profound impact on self-improvement and sales training has left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire and guide professionals worldwide.

A Journey from Humble Beginnings

Born in 1926 in Coffee County, Alabama, Zig Ziglar grew up in a poor family, facing numerous hardships and struggles. These early challenges became the foundation upon which he built a remarkable career dedicated to helping others achieve success and fulfillment. Ziglar’s story is a testament to the transformative power of a positive mindset and relentless determination.

The Power of a Positive Attitude

At the heart of Zig Ziglar’s philosophy is the belief that attitude, more than aptitude, determines one’s altitude in life. Zig emphasized that success starts from within. By cultivating a positive mindset, individuals can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. One of his famous quotes encapsulates this idea: “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.” This quote serves as a powerful reminder that the journey to greatness begins with taking that first step, no matter how small.

From Salesman to Motivational Icon

Zig Ziglar’s early career as a door-to-door salesman selling pots and pans provided him with the insights and experiences that shaped his motivational teachings. He understood that effective salesmanship was not about manipulation but about genuinely helping people find solutions to their problems. Ziglar was incredibly goal-oriented, believing strongly in the importance of setting clear, achievable goals.

The Importance of Goal Setting

One of Ziglar’s core teachings is the necessity of having a vision for the future and breaking down that vision into manageable steps. He famously said, “A goal properly set is halfway reached,” underscoring the significance of clear planning and persistence. Zig encouraged people to write down their goals, create action plans, and stay committed to their dreams regardless of the obstacles they might encounter.

I had the profound privilege of attending one of his goal-setting seminars late in his career. It was awe-inspiring to witness his passion and wisdom in person. Ziglar’s approach to goal setting is a critical lesson for anyone looking to achieve success in sales and life.

Prolific Speaker and Author

Zig Ziglar was a prolific speaker and author. His motivational talks captivated audiences with enthusiasm and wisdom. My copy of his classic book “See You at the Top” remains one of the most well-marked books in my library. This book, gifted to me by a high school counselor, literally changed my life. Ziglar’s teachings remind us that success is not just about achieving personal milestones but also about lifting others up along the way. His most famous quote, “You can have everything in life you want if you just help enough other people get what they want,” encapsulates this philosophy perfectly.

Starting the Day Right

One of Ziglar’s unique teachings is about how to start your day positively. Instead of waking up to an “alarm clock,” he suggested using an “opportunity clock.” This mindset shift transforms the beginning of the day from something dreaded to something filled with potential. Ziglar recommended a morning routine that includes sitting up in bed, clapping your hands, and declaring, “It’s a great day to get up and get going!” While this might seem silly, it’s about taking control of your day from the very start.

He believed that by doing this for 21 days, you could begin to see significant changes in your life. This exercise is not just about the physical act of getting up positively but about sowing actions that lead to habits, which then form character and ultimately determine your destiny.

The Legacy of Zig Ziglar

Zig Ziglar’s timeless wisdom and infectious positivity continue to light the path for those striving to make their dreams a reality. His teachings remind us that a positive attitude and clear goals are the cornerstones of success. By helping others achieve their goals, we can achieve our own. Zig Ziglar’s legacy lives on, inspiring us to reach new heights and make a positive impact on the world around us.
