Help Gen X and Baby Boomers Overcome Emotional Hurdles to Make Their Next Move
As sales associates, you’re often front and center for a clients’ home buying journey – from their first inquiry to their new beginning. And like many other life transitions filled with emotion – from marriage to starting a family to changing jobs – selling a home to start a fresh chapter is no exception. Recent insights from Opendoor’s 2024 Emotions in Real Estate Report reveal that sentimentality is an oft-ignored consideration in real estate – but it can be a significant factor in Baby Boomer and Gen X homeowners’ decisions to move.
Bittersweet Goodbyes
The vast majority (66%) of 55+ homeowners surveyed said they’re emotionally attached to their homes, with 56% having lived there for over 15 years. While some sellers may be willing to leave behind the emotional comforts of the familiar — from neighbors and community groups to friendly faces at local parks— to make their next move, others might be facing not just the question of “Can I sell this home?” but “Can I let go of it?”
Our data found that 28% of those 55+ cite letting go of a home with sentimental value as a top home-selling challenge. In fact, 22% cited emotional ties to the home among the top factors that influenced their home-selling decisions. This emotional attachment could explain why many older homeowners may be hesitant to come off the sidelines.
A New Chapter: Guiding Your Clients Forward
For 28% of 55+ sellers, letting go of a home filled with memories is one of their biggest challenges. Yet, selling a home also takes a toll: 65% of those surveyed found it to be one of the most stressful life events, alongside starting a new job. Only 31% of respondents felt calm and collected when buying and selling homes.
It’s clear that closing the deal isn’t just about handing over the keys; it’s about helping buyers feel secure in their decision to move on. By connecting with Gen X and Baby Boomer clients on a deeper level and understanding the complex emotions that come with moving, you’ll not only help them find a new home—you’ll help them move forward with confidence.
