3 Reasons Why You Make More Sales with Goal Clarity

Nowadays, so much attention focuses on the how of goal-setting. Unfortunately, we spend far too little time thinking about why we set goals.

Goal achievement is a noble pursuit. But you are infinitely more successful in reaching your dreams when you achieve a well-defined awareness of goal clarity.

Here are three reasons why you make more Sales with goal clarity:

1. Goal Clarity Normalizes the Future State

By definition, a goal is a picture of a future state that differs from the present state. You are here – you want to go there.

If you’re not clear on that future state – if the future is ill-defined – you cannot identify the target. If you cannot identify the target, it is highly unlikely you will accomplish the goal.

Goal clarity is about normalizing the future. It’s about gaining so much clarity on what the future will look like that the future state becomes normal in your mind.

For example, the reason so many choose not to exercise is that they don’t see themselves as fit people (I make a huge exception for people with physical limitations, injuries, illness, etc.).

If the mental picture of myself is someone who is physically unfit, any exercise you do will be abnormal. My brain will naturally draw you back to your sedentary (normal) life.

If you see yourself as a mediocre sales performer, your actions and behaviors will follow suit. Making that extra call or pushing yourself outside your comfort zone – things that top performers do – will remain atypical for you.

Unless you think like a top performer, your behaviors will revert to a mediocre mindset – and the same results will follow.

Goal clarity literally reprograms the mind and results in developing a new “norm” for the future.

2. Goal Clarity Puts the Focus on Results, not Just Efforts

When you are crystal clear on your desired future state, you can plan my strategy more easily and effectively.

Suppose you want to climb a mountain. You can picture yourself standing at the bottom, LOOKING UP, or you can picture yourself standing on the summit, LOOKING DOWN.

The former approach will cause fear and apprehension, wondering how you can possibly accomplish all the unknown steps. The latter approach will produce confidence and certainty, believing that each step will move you closer to reaching your goal of making it to the top.

Don’t think about the “how’s” – not yet. Think about getting that goal clear in your mind. The first steps will then become clear.

3. Goal Clarity Keeps You Forward-Thinking

When you normalize your future state  – when you are focused on results instead of efforts – you gain mental momentum. You feel excited about your goal and about what the future will bring. You enjoy a greater sense of anticipation to accomplish the task. You create energy, drive and enthusiasm.

Think for a moment about any substantial goal you have achieved in the past. Clarifying that goal probably gave you the energy and the confidence to accomplish that dream.

It’s goal-setting season. So, I’d like to encourage you to take a little time and just sit with your goal for a while.

Don’t start planning your first steps – not yet. Get that goal normalized in your brain, and allow the energy that comes with goal clarity to drive you toward reaching your new future state.

Get clear on your goal. Then go out and change the world.
